Black Hollyhock Seeds

(Alcea rosea 'Black Watchman’)

Care instructions:

Plant hollyhock seeds in spring (after last frost) or fall, spacing them 18–24 inches

apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Sow seeds only 1/4 inch deep—or barely

cover them—as they need light to germinate. Keep soil consistently moist;

seeds typically germinate in 10–14 days.  Most hollyhocks are

biennials, meaning they develop foliage the first year and bloom in the second

year, then die. Support: Grows 5 to 7 feet, may need staking

or to be planted against a fence or wall for support.

Harvesting Seeds:

Let seed heads turn brown and dry on the stem before collecting to plant for the next season.

Metaphysical Properties:

Black hollyhocks are associated with mystery, introspection, and deep transformation. It is used in magick for exploring the void, fertility rituals, and protection.  It symbolizes ambition and the cycle of life/rebirth. The near-black color is linked to the void, helping users confront deep subconscious issues, mysteries, and inner stillness. They are often associated with the mysteries of the night, deep transformation, and the bridge between the physical and spiritual realms. Because of their towering height and dark hue, black hollyhocks are seen as "ladders" between worlds. They are excellent for work involving ancestral communication or navigating major life transitions.They also can be used in shadow work to face and integrate the “darker” aspects of self. Even in their "dark" form, they symbolize the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. They represent the idea that from the darkness of the soil (or the soul), great beauty can grow. Their seeds are in abundance so if you are using this for abundance be specific with your words and intent! 

Hold these seeds in your palm. Whisper your intentions for the coming season before pressing them into the dark earth. Plant these seeds where you seek protection or wish to reach new heights. As they sink their roots into your soil, remember that we, too, are deeply rooted and eternally connected. As they grow tall, may they remind you of your own strength and your connection to the Earth. As these flowers bloom, may they reflect the evolving beauty of your own journey.

Little Witch’s Knowledge:

How I planted my hollyhocks I didn't, I literally threw the seeds into the rocks. Hollyhocks attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds so if you have cats I suggest not by a window otherwise you have your cats popping out the screen window to get to them, trust me on this I cannot open my kitchen window once they bloom  until fall when I cut them down. Cut the stalks down in the fall when they turn brown and save the seed pods and share the love, because you will be sharing that love in abundance.

Hollyhocks support the life cycle of painted lady butterflies as a host plant for their caterpillars and attract a wide range of pollinators, including various bees (bumble bees, carpenter bees, green metallic sweat bees), butterflies and hummingbirds. They are also visited by moths, such as the white-lined sphinx, and are highly regarded for supporting biodiversity in cottage gardens.
